Common problems

Dryer problems we can help with

These are typical causes, not a diagnosis. The only way to know for sure is to look at the appliance.

Runs but doesn’t heat

Common causes are a failed heating element or igniter, a blown thermal fuse, a thermostat problem, or a tripped breaker on an electric dryer.

Takes too long to dry

Frequently restricted airflow from a clogged lint screen, vent line or outside vent. It can also be a weakening heat source.

Won’t tumble

A broken drive belt, worn rollers or an idler pulley, or a failed motor can be to blame.

Won’t start

Look at the door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, control board or power supply.

Loud thumping, squealing or rumbling

Worn drum rollers, a bad belt or idler pulley, or something stuck in the drum.

Clothes are hot but the dryer shuts off early

Often overheating from poor airflow, which makes a safety device cut the heat.

Lint and fire safetyA clogged vent is one of the main causes of dryer fires. If your dryer is taking much longer than it used to, or the laundry room feels unusually hot or smells like burning, stop using it and have it checked.

Before you call

Things worth checking first

  • Clean the lint screen before every load.
  • Pull the dryer out and check the vent hose for crushing or lint buildup. Restricted venting is a common cause of long dry times and a real fire risk.
  • Check for a tripped breaker. Electric dryers use a double breaker, and sometimes only half of it trips.
  • Don’t overload the drum. Clothes need room to tumble so air can move through them.

Questions

Dryer repair FAQ

Why is my dryer running but my clothes are still wet?

Most often the vent is restricted or the heat source has failed. Cleaning the lint screen and vent is a good first step. If that doesn’t fix it, call or text us.

Do you work on both electric and gas dryers?

Please call or text and tell us which kind you have. We’ll let you know what we can handle. Work on gas lines and gas connections is something we’ll be upfront about before booking.

How do I know if a repair is worth it?

Compare the repair quote to the cost of a comparable new dryer, and think about its age. Our calculator does the math, and we’re happy to give an honest opinion.

Do you charge for the diagnosis?

We’ll tell you any diagnostic fee before we head your way, and the price of the repair before we start it.

Ready to get it fixed?
