How it works

The thinking behind the answer

What is the 50% rule?

A common rule of thumb says that if a repair costs about half or more of what a comparable new appliance would cost, replacing is usually the better value. It’s a guideline, not a law.

Does age matter?

Yes. A repair on an appliance that’s near the end of its typical life is a bigger gamble than the same repair on a newer one, because other parts may be close behind.

Are the typical lifespans exact?

No. The calculator uses rough typical lifespans (about 10 to 14 years depending on the appliance). Real life depends on the brand, the model and how it’s been used and maintained.
